Melatonin is the chief product secreted by pineal gland. The biology of melatonin and expression of its receptors in hair follicles have a close connection with hair growth and pigmentation. Melatonin not only interacts with its cognate receptors, but also exerts its role through androgen- and estrogen-receptor-mediated signaling pathways. Further study on melatonin may provide a new target for the treatment of hair diseases.
