The exact etiology and pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis ��AD�� have not yet been entirely elucidated. It may be the result of interaction between genetic factors, environmental factors, skin barrier defects and immunologic factors. Filaggrin gene is a member of epidermal differentiation complex, and it closely relates to the formation of cell membrane and terminal differentiation of epidermis. It has been identified that filaggrin gene is a susceptibility gene for AD, and the defect and loss of filaggrin protein may be a major cause of xerotic skin diseases.
