Candida albicans is a major mucosal and systemic fungal pathogen in immunocompromised hosts. Also, it often causes vaginal candidiasis and other mucosal and cutaneous candidiasis in healthy subjects. Invasive candidia infection has a high mortality. Some limitations have been reported in the efficacy and safety of conventional antifungal agents with frequent emergence of resistance. Recently, some new antibody vaccines have been developed and applied to animal models of and patients with potent anti-candida efficacy. Synergism has been noticed between anti-candida vaccines and conventional antifungal agents. Though further confirmation is required for the efficacy and safety, anti-candida vaccines have a perfect perspective in clinical application, and is expected to be an adjunctive therapy of candidiasis.
