Differences exist in the quantity, morphology and function of dendritic cells as well as the content of cytokines between photoaging skin and chronologically aging skin. The differences may result in the suppression of immune competence in photoaging skin, and even the entire immune system, by reducing the quantity of dendritic cells, deforming the characteristic dendritic appearence of dendritic cells and inducing a series changes in immunoregulatory factors, e.g., interleukin-10 and interleukin -12. This article reviews the changes of dendritic cells and cytokines in photoaging skin as well as their roles in immunosuppression.
