Photodynamic therapy ��PDT�� is a modality that involves the use of a photosensitizing agent and a specific wavelength of light to create singlet oxygen or free radicals, resulting in the selective destruction of targeted tissue. Topical methyl aminolevulinate PDT or 5 aminolevulinic acid PDT has shown a favorable effect in the treatment of acne vulgaris, and provide an option for patients with poor response to conventional treatments. This article overviews the selection of photosensitizers and light sources in, as well as the principle, clinical efficacy and safety of PDT in the management of acne vulgaris.
