Fc gamma receptors ��FcγR�� are functionally classified into activating receptors and inhibitory receptors. Activating FcγR can mediate phagocytosis, antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity ��ADCC��, and induce the release of cytokines or pro-inflammatory mediators. By contrast, inhibitory FcγR regulate the activating FcγR-induced activation of B lymphocytes, dendritic cells and innate immune effector cells. The balance between activating and inhibitory FcγR, which is affected by the actual affinity of Fc receptors to antibody isotypes as well as Th1 and Th2 cytokines, determines the function of inflammatory effector cells. FcγR play important roles in the pathogenesis of some cutaneous vasculitis. Futural challenge is to translate this knowledge into practice to optimize the therapy of cutaneous vasculitis.
