Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), a member of TNF gene superfamily, can selectively induce the apoptosis of many transformed cells and play critical roles in maintaining the stability of internal environment. Due to its contribution to the regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, and immunity in skin, and to the maintaining of internal environment stability, TRAIL has turned into a research focus of dermatologists. Studies on TRAIL in melanoma, atopic dermatitis, cutaneous leishmaniasis and psoriatic arthritis show that TRAIL might serve as a new therapeutic target for some skin diseases.
