Treatment of chloasma with lasers and intense pulse light

Abstract:

Chloasma is a common hyperpigmentation disease on the face. Topical treatments, such as sunscreen, decolorants, tretinoin, chemical exfoliates, and corticosteroids, are still the first choice for chloasma. The mechanism for laser therapy is mostly based on selective photothermolysis. Epidermal type of chloasma responses well to conventional laser therapy, but may recur rapidly and even exacerbate with more severe pigmentation. Dermal and mixed types of chloasma are usually refractory. To solve these problems, new therapeutic technologies have been developed, such as CO2 laser plus Q-switched alexandrite laser, Er:YAG laser, intense pulse light, and fractional laser; however, further researches are required to confirm the therapeutic effects and to determine the optimal treatment parameters of these technologies.
