Exfoliative toxins of Staphylococcus aureus and their mechanism of action in staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome

Abstract:

Exfoliative toxins(ETs) of Staphylococcus aureus are directly responsible for the skin exfoliation of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS). Clinical manifestations of SSSS are related to ETs serotypes. ETs act as serine proteases on the granular layer of epidermis, specifically bind to and hydrolyze desmoglein-1 by cleaving the Glu381-X peptide bond between the extracellular domain EC3 and EC4, so as to cause blisters within the epidermis. In addition, ETs may act as a superantigen in the pathogenesis of SSSS.
