Probiotics for the treatment of atopic dermatitis

Abstract:

Kong Xue, Mao Shiwang, Zhang Huailiang Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Institute of Dermatology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Nanjing 210042, China Corresponding author: Zhang Huailiang, Email: drzhanghl@vip.163.com Abstract Atopic dermatitis AD is a chronic recurrent skin disease, and mostly occurs during infancy and childhood. Epidemiologic studies have found that the prevalence of AD has been greatly increasing in many countries in the past 30 years. The occurrence of AD is mainly related to skin barrier impairment, abnormality of immune function and changes of bacterial flora. Probiotics are live microorganisms, and appropriate probiotic supplementation is beneficial to the host. As a kind of immune modulator, their safety has been proved. In clinic, probiotics can be used for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases, such as AD.
