Anticonvulsants are still commonly used drugs, including gabapentin, pregabalin and tricyclic antidepressants. Topical treatment is a recommended therapeutic approach to PHN in clinic. High-concentration capsaicin patches can be applied in patients who fail to respond to other treatments or cannot tolerate systemic therapies. Neither narcotic analgesics nor nerve block therapy is recommended as the first-line therapy because of their adverse effects. In addition, the application of new drugs such as tumor necrosis factor?-α inhibitors and patient?-controlled analgesia in patients with PHN have gained increasing attention.
