Anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties of tetracyclines and their clinical application in dermatology

Abstract:

Chen Fangru, Hao Fei. Department of Dermatology, Southwest Hospital, Third Military Medical University, Chongqing 400038, China Corresponding author: Hao Fei, Email: haofei62@medmail.com.cn Abstract Tetracyclines not only have strong antibacterial effects, but also have definite anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory effects. The action mechanisms of tetracyclines mainly include inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases, clearance of reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide, suppression of granuloma formation and angiogenesis, inhibition of inflammatory cytokines and apoptosis, etc. Tetracyclines have become a choice for the medical treatment of acne rosacea and acne. Also, they have been attempted in the treatment of other non-infectious dermatoses such as bullous skin diseases and neutrophilic dermatosis. It is of great significance to learn advances in studies of tetracyclines and to fully and properly utilize their non-antibacterial properties in the treatment of various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases in dermatology.
