Unlike traditional ablative and nonablative lasers, fractional lasers only act on some regions of the skin without involvement of surrounding nomal skin, allowing a rapid healing with short downtime. Fractional lasers deliver high energy to the dermis through micropores, which ensures efficacy and avoids common adverse reactions induced by traditional ablative lasers, such as permanent depigmentation and scarring. In this review, the authors summarize clinical application, action mechanism and efficacy of ablative and non-ablative fractional lasers in the treatment of scars, photoaging, striae atrophicae, pigmentary disorders, baldness, as well as in transdermal drug delivery.
