Cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis of pathologic scar. Some fibrosis-inducing cytokines, for example, transforming growth factor-beta, connective tissue growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, platelet derived growth factor, etc, promote scar formation, while other cytokines, such as interferon, epidermal growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor, inhibit the formation of scar. The intervention of scar formation by the combination of gene technique and cytokines is expected to be a breakthrough the treatment of pathologic scar.
