Chlamydial persistence is a reversible state generated during conditions deleterious to chlamydial growth.Several factors including the presence of cytokines,growth in non-permissive cells,nutritional deficiency and antibiotic effects could contribute to chlamydial persistence.Although the mechanism of persistence is still unknown,researches indicated its occurrence in vivo.Insufficient antichlamydial immunity,low inflammatory response,apoptosis modulation and privileged tissue localization may favor chlamydial persistence.
