In epidermis.stem cell factor is expressed in keratinocytes and its receptor in melanocytes. They are involved not only in the differentiation,proliferation and migration of melanocytes while neural crest cells are developing to melanocytes,but also the maintenance of the normal ftmction of mature melanocytes.131ocking of the binding of stem cell factor and its receptor leads to the damage of melanin synthesis of melanocytes.The expression of stem cell factor and its receptor is abnormal in the lesions of vitiligo patients,implicating their possible involvement in the pathogenesis of vitiligo.
