Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are proteolytic enzyme that play important role in degradation of extracellular matrix. Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMPs), as natural inhibitors of MMPs,could inhibit MMPs' expression and activity in many aspects. Abnormal expression of MMPs, as well as their broken balance with TIMPs, were considered to be involved in pathogenesis of several dermatoses. Detailed studies on MMPs and TIMPs could provide clues for mechanisms of development, progress as well as therapeutic methods ofrelated dermatoses.
