Mucormycosis is a kind of lethal infection caused by any fungus in the order Mucorales. It often involves the central nervous system, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, skin, orbit and paranasal sinuses. The hallmark of this disease is angioinvasion, thrombosis and tissue necrosis. Treatment of the disease is often difficult. The priaciples of treating mucormycosis include prompt diagnosis, removal of the underlying predisposing factors, if any, appropriate surgical debridement of infested tissue, and efTective antifungal therapy. Surgical debridement can improve the cure rate. Antifungal therapy may he given with single or multiple antifungal agents. Furthermore, it is feasible to use adjunctive therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy and cytokine therapy.
