Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of isotretinoin ointment 0.05% in the treatment of acne vulgaris. Methods A total of 240 patients were enrolled into the study. The patients were instructed to apply isotretinoin ointment 0.05% or retinoic acid cream 0.05% once daily in the evening for 8 week. The treatment efficacy was evaluated by the counting of non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions and global evaluation of improvement. Cutaneous tolerance was assessed by observation of erythema, scaling and burning. Results Afrer treatment for 8 weeks, the counts of lesion were decreased from 45.52±19.80 to 16.24±16.10 in study group, and from 44.00±19.13 to 12.24±11.34 in controls. The response rate was 69.75% in study group and 80.51% in control group. There was no significant difference in response rate between two groups, so was in the local adverse effect(P>0.05).Conclusions Isotretinoin ointment, which had similar clinical efficacy and cutaneous tolerance with rctinoic acid cream 0.05%, is safe and effective to treat acne vulgaris.
