Cafe-au-lait spots

Cafe-au-lait spots are a common pigmented disorder, while multiple cafe-au-lait macules are often indicative of an underlying systematic disorder. Under a microscope, the melanocyte number is increased and giant melanin granules could be found. The mechanism may be associated to the mutation of DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes, and many cell factors such as hepatocyte growth factor and stem cell factor also participate in the formation of cafe-au-lait spots. The effective rate of laser therpy varies widely, and relapse is common. Further researches are needed for the mechanism and therpy of cafe-au-lait spots.
