Photodynamic therapy in the treatment of skin photoaging

Abstract:

Wrinkles and skin roughness are always bothersome in facial photoaging. Photodynamic therapy is attracting more and more interest in its management. Latest clinical researches has confirmed the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy, especially in the improvement of fine wrinkles and skin texture, which is superior to that of intense pulsed light and laser. The electron microscopy of skin specimen indicated more synthesis of type I collagen fibrils in the side of face treated with photodynamic therapy than in that with intense pulse light alone. This article presents with incubation durations of photosensitizers and various choices of light and laser sources in photodynamic study, as well as factors leading to difference in therapeutic effect, and elucidates main approaches to the formation of wrinkles induced by ultraviolet, and the possible roles of heat shock protein and matrix metalloproteinase in wrinkle removal by photodynamic therapy.
