Immunohistochemical research in extramammary Paget's disease

Abstract:

Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare intraepithelial neoplasm of skin. Immunohistochemistry technique has revealed that many immune markers express in EMPD, such as cytokeratins, mucin, gross cystic disease fluid protein-15 (GCDFP-15), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), carcinoembryonic-like antigen (CEA), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), etc. These immune markers are usually of different values to the clarification of EMPD origin, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, speculation of EMPD prognosis, and guide to EMPD management. Recent studies indicate that Toker cells and mammary-like gland are likely candidates for the histogenesis of EMPD. The expression of MUC1 and HER2 often suggests a strong capability of invasion of EMPD. The difference in immunophenotypes may benefit the differential diagnosis of "cutaneous" and "endodermal" EMPD as well as speculation about its origin and prognosis.
