Topical antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in dermatology

Abstract:

With the development and application of new photosensitising agents as well as the improvement in therapeutic technique, the technology of photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been introduced into the treatment of local infections induced by microbial pathogens besides that of proliferative diseases. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy is a new emerging treatment options in dermatology. Its principle is that new cationic photosensitisers could interact with the cell surface of bacteria, yeast and virus or infectious tissue, and allow a lot of photosensitizers to accumulate at cytoplasmic membrane. Then, under the irradiation of special-wavelength light, photosensitizers produce singlet oxygen to kill pathogens. This paper reviews in vitro trials, animal trials and clinical trials regarding the therapeutic effects, tolerance, genetic toxicity, and possible problems in application of this technique are reviewed here.
