Keratinocytes are important components of the epidemis. In the past, keratinocytes were considered simply as passive targets of immunological attack from infiltrating T lymphocytes, but a number of studies have verified that keratinocytes actively participate in the cutaneous immune responses. Activated keratinocytes overexpress a series of cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules, and play an active role in the pathogenesis of some chronic inflammatory skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis, participating in and maintaining the process of the initiation and development of the inflammation.
