The color of hair shaft is determined mainly by the melanogenesis and expression of hair melanin (eumelanin and/or pheomelanin). After synthesized by melanocytes, melanin granules are transferred to cortical keratinocytes and finally deposit in the hair shaft. The above process mainly involves the development of the follicle melanocyte, the melanogenesis and transfer of melanin granules in hair follicles, regulation of melanocytes, deposition of melanin granules at hair shaft and aging of hair follicle pigmentary units.
