Stress and Hair Loss

Abstract:

Stress has long been implicated as one of the causal factors of hair loss. Stress is a primary inducer of telogen effluvium, also an aggravating factor of hair loss (e.g., androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata)mainly induced by endocritic, infectious, genetic or immunological factors. Depression induced by hair loss may aggravate it and induce a self-perpetuating vicious circle. Besides the drugs, comprehensive and cautious strategies are required to relieve the patients' psychological pressure, which will help to release the stress, block the vicious circle and raise the patients' quality of life. Here we summarize the information about the physiological relationship between stress and hair loss, the way of stress influencing hair growth and the molecular mechanisms of the hair follicles response to stress.
