Immune Responses to Cutaneous Fungal Infections

Abstract:

Due to the increase of malignancies, autoimmune diseases, transplantations, diabetes mellitus and HIV infections, the number of both immunocompromised patients and fungal infections rises to a new level. However, most of the immunologic studies in these fungal infections are restricted to deep mycoses. We review the immunologic studies in various skin fungal infections and summarize the functions of major cells and molecules involved in the immune responses to the fungi invading the skin. Fungal antigenicities and immune responses are described for different cutaneous infection types. Additionally, the relationship between some fungi related diseases, such as seborrhoeic dermatitis as well as atopic dermatitis, and fungal infections is also reviewed.
