The Relationship Between Th1/Th2 Cytokines and Genital Herpes

Department of Dermatology, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai 200040, China

Department of Dermatology, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai 200040, China

Abstract:

The Th1 and Th2 type cytokines, which regulate the human immune response, play an important role in the immune response to infection with genital herpes virus. In patients with genital herpes, the levels of Th1 cytokines relatively decreased, while those of Th2 cytokines increased. Th1/Th2 imbalance is linked with the frequency of relapses of the disease. Furthermore, the balance between the two types of cytokine is related to the interaction of cytokines, costimulating molecules and mechanism of signal conduction. It is postulated that the prophylaxis and treatment of genital herpes be carried out by the shifting from Th2 to Th1 type cytokines.
