Survivin, a new member of the inhibitors of apoptosis protein (IAP) family, not only has the ability of inhibiting cell apoptosis, but also participates in the regulation of cell mitosis and cytokinesis. Survivin is selectively expressed in various kinds of benign and malignant skin lesions, but not in normal skin. This review focuses on the molecular structure of survivin, the mechanism of apoptosis inhibition, its role in cell division and the relationship of it with benign and malignant proliferative skin diseases. Survivin, as a novel therapeutic target of some skin diseases, has been postulated.
