Objective To compare the efficacy of 5-aminolevulinic acid-based photodynamic therapy ��ALA-PDT�� versus CO2 laser for verruca plantaris. Methods A total of 136 patients with verruca plantaris were recruited in this study, and equally divided into two groups to be treated with ALA-PDT and CO2 laser respectively. Results Significant differences were observed in the cure rate ��86.8% ��59/68�� vs. 100% ��68/68��, P < 0.05�� and recurrence rate ��13.6% ��8/59�� vs. 29.4% ��20/68��, P < 0.05�� between patients treated with ALA-PDT and those with CO2 laser. Conclusions The cure rate is higher in patients treated with CO2 laser than in those with ALA-PDT, while ALA-PDT seems safer with a lower recurrence rate and less pain. Nevertheless, multiple treatment sessions and considerable cost have limited the clinical application of ALA-PDT.
