As a histological hallmark of skin photoaging, actinic elastosis is histologically characterized mainly by the abnormalities of structures and functions of elastic fibers. Now little is known about its mechanism, and ultraviolet irradiation may play an important role by affecting the expression of some enzymes and proteins, such as matrix metalloproteinases, elastases, and clusterin, inducing a change in the components of elastic fibers including elastin and microfibril and finally promoting the initiation and progression of actinic elastosis. Apart from that, nonenzymic glycation, infrared radiation and heat shock reaction also contribute to the development of actinic elastosis.
