Tumor necrosis factor α is a cytokine secreted by various types of cells. Currently, three tumor necrosis factor α inhibitors are available in the market, including infliximab, etanercept and adalimumab. These three agents have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration only for the treatment of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in dermatology field. However, a growing number of published reports have suggested that TNF-α inhibitors may be effective for the treatment of more dermatoses, and have proved to be effective for the treatment of numerous other inflammatory skin diseases such as hidradenitis suppurativa, pyoderma gangrenosum, and pityriasis rubra pilaris. This article presents the advances in the application of tumor necrosis factor α inhibitors in the treatment of dermatoses.
