Effects of topical glucocorticosteroids on skin barrier function

Abstract:

Short-term use of topical glucocorticosteroids will dramatically reduce the recovery time of skin barrier, and long-term application may alter the structure and function of skin barrier. The mechanisms underlying glucocorticosteroid-induced destruction of skin barrier are multitudinous, including the inhibition of keratinocyte proliferation as well as the influence on the differentiation of keratin and filaggrin and on the formation of corneodesmosomes and intercellular lipid matrices. Therefore, skin barrier-protecting products should be used in the treatment of glucocorticosteroid addictive dermatitis and combined with glucocorticosteroid during the treatment of skin diseases.
