The family of heat shock protein ��HSP�� exists in all prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The expression increase of HSPs in response to environmental stress protects cells in a certain degree. Most HSPs are molecular chaperones, and their principal function is to regulate protein metabolism, including protein folding, transmembrane transport, degradation and regulation of erroneous proteins. The expression of HSPs is closely related to epidermal differentiation, photoprotection and some skin diseases. This review focuses on the expression of HSPs in normal skin, photodamaged skin and lesions of some inflammatory skin diseases as well as its significance
